Recipe of the Week
Tomato Lemon Dressing (Thanks
again, April!)
Blend
together the following:
1
large ripe tomato
juice
and zest of one lemon
½ cup
olive oil
salt
& pepper to taste
Feel
free to pour through a sieve to strain out the seeds, but not necessary.
Voila!
Its simple, and tasty. And a perfect topping to a cool dinner salad. This
would taste fantastic using a ½ pint of Sungolds, too so when you see them
in your boxes in a week or so, try a variation of this recipe!
What’s
Happening on the Farm
More
cucumbers from Peregrine Farm. Ours are growing quickly, I hope to have
another round of them for you someday! The red bell peppers you’re
receiving are the “Mexi-bells” I was talking about last week.
They have a touch of heat to them, and are excellent fried/sauteed with
other veggies, especially potatoes. Basically, they look like a small red
bell pepper, and they have the same thick walls and texture, they’re
just a bit hot. There are billions of these peppers out there, so I hope
you like them!
The
heat has been quite impressive to say the least, but here we are in August!
So I do know, by looking at the calendar, that in a few weeks, there will
be some relief. That always keeps me going! For now, I’m getting as
much done in the early hours of the day, and pretty much just hide in the
house and sit in front of the fan during the afternoon (a perfect time to
write the newsletter!). As I’ve mentioned to some of you, we
don’t have A/C in our garage apartment (2nd story) house.
We used to, but when we built our 6’x6’ tomato room, it got the
A/C. Yes, the tomatoes are breadwinners here on the farm, and they get the
cool room priority. (Also the peppers, eggplant, squash, onions…) On
super hot days, we will go in there, (it stays a frigid 65 degrees) and sit
on 5 gallon buckets and take a break. I am happy to say, though, that last
week, we finally bought another window unit A/C, so we’re much
happier these days!
So,
this is the first year I’ve successfully grown watermelons. (I tried
once a few years ago, and I felt like they’d never ripen before the
weeds took over.) Therefore, I will have a FEW (theres just not enough for
everyone to get one…) melons available at the Hanes Parking Lot
location on a first come/first serve basis. I only planted 5 or 6 plants,
just so we’d have enough here at the house to experiment with. So, if
you get one of these melons (they’re an heirloom variety called Moon
and Stars, and they have seeds), its your job to let me know two things: 1)
was it ripe? Too ripe? Not ripe at all? And 2) how was the flavor?
I’ll grow more next year, I promise. The greatest disappointment this
year for me has been the lack of fruit like melons and cantaloupe that
I’ve had for y’all. Growing them is new to me, and I’m
still trying to figure out how to do it so I don’t have a bazillion
ready one week, then none at all the next week. Better luck next year? I
hope so. We also have plans to add blueberry and blackberry plants to the
farm this fall/winter. I know the blueberries will take a few years to
establish and produce, but I believe its shorter for the blackberries.
Something to look forward to! (Plus we’re adding asparagus to the mix
in the spring, too!)
