This
Week on the Farm While it wasn’t enough rain to put much of a dent in
the deficit (which I’m sure must be a couple of inches by now), the
showers Friday and Saturday definitely helped, and we’ll take what we
can get. I spent Sunday playing
catch-up on the tractor, tilling and getting beds ready for planting winter
squash (which we usually harvest in the fall), beans, flowers and
peppers. Up until this weekend, the
ground was so dry I couldn’t get the tiller to do its job properly
– it struggled to get through the rock-hard dry soil, and the cloud of
dust that would kick up behind it was frightening enough to make me stop and
wait for enough moisture to continue smoothly. Spring crops are growing beautifully and we are beginning
to see more variety. Spinach for
everyone this week, and full shares will receive the first few beet
bunches. Don’t worry,
you’ll all be receiving them soon.
Beets don’t size up all at the same time, so they are fewer in
numbers at first, but this allows for an extended harvest season. Lettuce mix again this week, along with
onions and garlic. Some of the green
garlic is starting to mature, so if, when you cut into it all the cloves are
formed, and the skins are starting to get a little tough, just peel it and
use it like mature, cured garlic.
Otherwise, just continue to use the whole thing. In another month or so, we’ll be
pulling all the garlic left in the field and drying it for storage. What to
Look Forward To In the
coming few weeks, you’ll see head lettuce in your boxes instead of the
mix. I may start including leeks in
the next weeks’ boxes, definitely in 2 weeks, along with cilantro. More beets, the start of sugar snap peas,
and the first of the summer squash in two weeks. Questions or comments?
